Patrick Henry Community College plans to launch an associate of applied science: physical therapist assistant degree program in the spring of 2019. It will take until then to establish the program and start the process of having it accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), according to a report presented to the college’s board on Monday. That means that within two years, students wanting to become assistants to physical therapists may no longer have to leave the area to receive training in the field.

The Virginia Employment Commission reports it is the fourth-highest growing occupation in the Martinsville area, and data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show opportunities in the field are expected to increase by 41 percent through 2024.
