Samuel Mitchell Watkins, 92, of Martinsville died Monday, February 27, 2017, at his home. He was born in Henry County on August 19, 1924, a son of the late Ben and Mary Stultz Watkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Dillard Watkins.
He was retired from the Martinsville Bulletin after 47 years of service. He was also a member of New Light Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee, on the Men’s Choir and the Kitchen Committee. He was also a member of the Martinsville Hunt Club and the Layman’s League.
Those left to cherish his memory include four daughters, Mary Watkins, of Pennsylvania; Deborah G. Watkins, Shirley Taylor and Pamela Preston, all of Martinsville, Va.; two sons, Douglas and Samuel Watkins, both of Martinsville, Va.; one sister, Nancy Martinez, of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Eugene Watkins, of Martinsville, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 3, 2017, at noon at the Pentecostal Assembly Building on Carver Road with the Rev. Terry Hairston, officiating. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral and will be at the home at other times.
