A Bassett man will serve seven years in prison for an attempted murder conviction. The Martinsville Bulletin reports that Telvin O’Shea Hairston of Bassett was sentenced Thursday in connection with an April 2016 shooting on Market Street in Martinsville. He had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges.
The incident happened in front of the Martinsville Bulletin parking lot on the night of April 17, 2016. Asanti Hodge told the court he was walking home when an SUV in which Hairston was a passenger pulled up and Hairston fired a shot in his direction. A blast from the 12-gauge shotgun grazed his clothing but he was not injured. Hodge testified that he started to run while Hairston fired several more rounds. Some of the pellets struck the newspaper building, where employees were inside working.
The two men were acquaintances and Hodge said they’d had a friendly conversation just prior to the shooting. Hairston admitted firing the shots but said he did not remember much about the incident because he had been drinking and taking medications for mental health issues.
