No one is expecting a warm response over a “note” sent to the Henry County Board of Supervisors by Martinsville Mayor Gene Teague asking if they might have any interest in talking about Martinsville becoming a town. After the numbers are crunched, it’s been determined Martinsville’s costs would be reduced by $28 million dollars a year if it reverted to a town. That would more than adequately take care of the $1 million deficit City Council is currently trying to handle. Some of the savings would come from the elimination of duplicated services, but the rest would come at the expense of Henry County taxpayers. That, of course, is a source of contention for Henry County officials.
