Bassett Man Arrested on Multiple Charges after Easter Weekend Standoff

On April 15, 2017, at approximately 12:45 pm the Martinsville/Henry County 911 Center received a call of a domestic disturbance at 19 Jessica Ave., Bassett, Virginia.  Deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the residence.

Upon their arrival, they observed Jeffery Wellington Newton on the porch of the home and he was armed with a large kitchen knife. Newton went into the home and refused to come outside. He communicated with deputies through an open window and made threats to harm himself and deputies. After 4 hours of negotiations, Newton came out of his home and was taken into custody.

Jeffery Wellington Newton, 49, of 19 Jessica Ave., Bassett, VA was charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (felony) and 5 misdemeanors, Domestic Assault, Destruction of Property, Indecent Exposure, Intoxication in Public and Obstruction of Justice. Newton is currently held in the Henry County Jail without bond.
