Martha Spencer went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Martinsville Memorial Hospital. She was born March 9, 1925 in Henry County to the late Joseph Henry and James Ella Lampkins Hairston. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of over fifty years, John (Dew) Spencer; her youngest child, Terry Spencer; three sisters, Evelyn Fisher, Marie Millner and Vivian Dierden; and two brothers, Joe Louis and Jimmie Hairston.
Martha was a longtime member of Mt. Olive East Christian Church. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Henry County Training School and attended Virginia State College. She was a renowned seamstress, operating her own shop where she was well known for making such elaborate apparel as wedding and other formal gowns. She retired from Hampco Apparel. A big fan, Martha didn’t let anything come between her and watching her soaps. But her greatest joy was simply being with her family, for family meant everything to her.

The funeral will be Saturday, May 14, 2017, at Mt Olive East Christian Church at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and other times at the home of her sister, Valerie Pettie, 835 Carver Road, Martinsville.
