It’s breeding time for snakes again and people are reportedly spotting snakes in abundance throughout the region. Copperheads have been seen around area trails. Virginia Wildlife Management encourages everyone to be mindful of their surroundings.
Snakes will not try to catch you and bite you, but if they feel threatened by your presence they will strike in self-defense. So, be alert, be aware, stay away from the snake’s area and the snake will stay away from you.
And for those that believe in the adage “the only good snake is a dead snake” note that it is illegal to kill a snake in Virginia unless it poses a safety threat. Illegally killing a snake is a Class 2 misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.
