The September 11 attacks, or 9-1-1, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda on the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 16 years ago today. The attacks killed 2,996 people, injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.
After a 10-year manhunt, Osama bin Laden, the leader of the group, was killed by American special forces in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 2, 2011.
The City of Martinsville is remembering the day by displaying the U.S. Flag along the sidewalks in the Uptown area.
