Marie Johnson Gardner, 98, went to be with her Lord, Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in Winston-Salem, NC. Formerly of Bassett, VA, Marie was born on April 15, 1919 in Franklin County, VA to the late Samuel W. and Amy Lovell Johnson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William Terrell Gardner; brothers, Elton Johnson, Curtis Johnson, and Gene “Frank” Johnson; and sisters, Texas Padgett and Estelle Davis.
Marie lived most of her life in the Oak Level section before moving several years ago to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Walkertown, NC. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Fort Trial Christian Church since 1936. Marie was very active and faithful in attendance and church activities as long as her health permitted.
She is survived by her son, Jimmy D. Gardner and wife Gayle of Walkertown, NC; grandsons, Jason C. Gardner and wife Cindi of White House, TN and Todd N. Gardner and wife Misty of Bassett, VA; one step-granddaughter, Kim Williams and husband Guy of Summerfield, NC; two great-grandchildren, Cassie and Macey Gardner of White House, TN; and sisters, Bertha Burge of Winston-Salem, NC, Geneva Turner of Martinsville, VA, Ruth Masters of Bassett, VA, and Inell Fox of Collinsville, VA.
Family will receive friends at Fort Trial Christian Church from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018. The funeral will follow the visitation at 2:30 p.m. at the church with Pastor Milford Witt and her grandson, Jason C. Gardner officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
