Hugh F. Sautter, 97, of Lake Wylie, S.C., and previously of Red Hill Drive, Martinsville, died on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, in Lake Wylie.
Mr. Sautter was born on October 26, 1920, in Bowling Green, Ohio, the son of Hugh Floyd and Helen Hughes Sautter. He was a graduate of Bowling Green High School and attended Bowling Green State University before enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. He served in the 76th Infantry Division, graduated from Officer Candidate School and the Army Field Medical Service. Honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant in 1946, he remained on reserve status with the United States Air Force until 1957.
Mr. Sautter spent his career with the Sun Oil Company, Toledo Refinery, retiring in 1981 from management in the maintenance planning department.
He married Eileen G. Freimark in January 1948; she predeceased him in 2009 after nearly 61 years of marriage.
He is survived by a sister, BerthaJean Hedges of Perrysburg Ohio. He is also survived by a daughter, Diane S. Adkins, and son-in-law, Dr. David Adkins, of Stephens City, Va., formerly of Martinsville; a son, Terry G. Sautter, and daughter-in-law, Kelly Sautter, of Lake Wylie, S.C.; five grandchildren: Rev. Kristin (Sandy) Whitesides of Stephens City, Va., Katie (Shamus) Brennan of Washington, D.C., Andrew Sautter, Brian Sautter, and Michael Sautter, all of Lake Wylie; and two great-grandsons, Isaac Whitesides and Samuel Whitesides.
Mr. Sautter was a member of Zoar Lutheran Church, Perrysburg, Ohio, and attended Starling Avenue Baptist Church, Martinsville.
A memorial service will be held at Starling Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, January 13, at one o’clock, with the Revs. Brian and Ashley Harrington and the Rev. Kristin Whitesides officiating; the family will receive friends an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Starling Avenue Baptist Church Community Meals Fund.
