Consultants from Durham, North Carolina met with city residents and city officials Wednesday to discuss the westside of Martinsville and what might be done to improve the 5-way stop dilemma at 220 and Fayette. The Reverend Tyler Millner was on hand to urge everyone to make good on their promises to improve what he called an area “inhabited mostly by minorities.” Thought will be given to turning the dangerous intersection into a “roundabout” without lights. According to wikipedia, a roundabout is a “type of looping junction in which road traffic travels in one direction around a central island and priority is given to the circulating flow. Signs usually direct traffic entering the circle to slow and to give way to traffic already on it.” Martinsville will be getting grant money to make improvements so costs will have to be determined to see if such a project is feasible. Not too many years ago there was serious thought toward constructing large artificial pineapple trees at the intersection, but that idea never took off.
