The Martinsville Police Department has issued a warning about dangerous drugs in the area after a dramatic spike in substance abuse overdoses lately. They say the majority of the overdoses have been caused by Fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opioid but can be up to 100 times stronger than morphine. It can be swallowed, smoked, snorted, or injected and can also be found in prescription pain patches that can be abused by smoking or chewing. Police said most of the Fentanyl they have encountered has been produced illegally. They said the drug is being used to cut, mix or lace other drugs such as illegally sold prescription pills, cocaine, crack, and heroin. Many overdoses are occurring because people are not aware that the drug they are using is laced with Fentanyl.
